Just kinda think of your roads as a hierarchy of "specificity". Keep playing the game and try things out, see what works and your cities will get progessively better. The absolutely best thing to do though is to keep at it! It can take a long time (for me it took roughly 300 hours) untill you just suddenly get a feel for it and start building things you're happy with. Inspiration is one of the key factors for me. When you see what others do you'll see things that you like and incorporate similair things into your builds.
